Amelia, Age 6

The judges said that Amelia’s entry has a strong visual identity. the judges liked the symbolism of growing money – which made it memorable. Strong focus on taking responsibility for money and evidence she really understood the assignment.

Naina, Age 7

The judges said that Naina’s entry was really thought through and the themes were captured well. They enjoyed that it was poetic and thought it was clever that it stayed on topic but also included rhyme.

The Young Money Challenge was very popular and hugely enjoyable at Newland House this year, with 25 of our Year 1 and 2 pupils signing up to join the workshops, all eager to find out more about ‘Money and Inclusion!’  This fantastic initiative gave our children the chance to learn more about money management in an age-appropriate way and sparked their curiosity at a young age in a subject that affects us all.  The resources provided by the [Young Money] Team are of a high quality, very user-friendly and allowed for flexibility in delivery and opportunities to differentiate according to the needs of the children and the school.  The programme allowed us to start to build the strong foundations needed to understand the value and behaviour of money, to differentiate between needs and wants and to appreciate that not everyone has the same opportunities when it comes to money management, thereby equipping our young people with the confidence to help themselves and others make wise financial decisions about their money management now and in the future.  Thank you to all concerned at [Young Money] for such a wonderful opportunity.  We look forward to continuing our money management journey and to supporting our children in equipping themselves with the skills and qualities they need to make empowered financial decisions. “

Fatma and Sabrina, Age 10-11

The judges said that their entry covered all bases and created a visually intriguing creation. The judges said the creation made them want to read each piece of information and was a bit different to a typical display. They also said the creation contained great take aways and important information.

Fatma and Sabrina, Age 10-11 Quote:

“We were very excited to take part in the Money Challenge.  We decided to create a 3D project showing different ways of spending money safely.

Firstly, we thought about the items that people spend their money on such as daily essentials (food, toiletries and petrol).  Then, we considered different ways to pay for these items safely rather than carrying money.  Our model showed coupons, credit cards and ATMS – all ways of paying or transferring money.  Furthermore, we also highlighted on our model how people can protect their money.  We made a mini-safe and explained how a personal code is required to access the safe.

We were excited when we heard about the challenge and we really wanted to work together on this project.  We discussed and shared ideas: one of us researched the different ways to spend and protect money whilst the other designed and created the 3D model. It was a great opportunity to work with a friend and learn all about keeping safe with money!   We were so shocked to hear that we had won but are really pleased.

We would like to thank you for this opportunity.  It really helped us understand how to be safe with money which is important for us in the future.”

Alicia, Elspeth and Iman, Age 10-11

The judges said that their entry created a really strong narrative. Their creation drew in the attention of the judges, and conveyed a clear message that shows the team really understood how scams work.

Penelope, Age 11

The judges said that Penelope put a lot of thought and detail into their creation. The judges said it was easy to understand and fun. Their creation translates the information on ways to pay into a fun interactive game.

Ava, Evie and Sophia, Age 13-14

The judges said that they made an innovative creation. The judges said the creation promoted financial inclusion in a sensitive way and the information was very cleverly created. They said they could imagine the app being created.

Laiba, Age 13

The judges said that Laiba covered a lot of information in a way that was easy to digest. The judges said her creation was artistically exceptional and that the ominous drawing suited the subject matter – conveying a clear message.

“We learnt about the surprising ways in which technology allows scammers to develop new and clever ways of getting us to part with our money. People can disguise themselves in surprising ways online and it is important for us all to be cautious with our personal information. I really enjoyed the fraud video with Troy the magician. I used this as the main design in my poster as it is a good way to help people understand fraud and the ways scams work. I think it is important to remain cautious but we should all also make sure we are informed so we aren’t limited in our actions.”

Shamsah, Daniel and Umar, Age 13-14

The judges said that they created an informative poster with fantastic art. The art was eye catching and easy to understand.

“We really enjoyed taking part in The Young Money Challenge and we are very proud of Laiba’s hard work and achievement. The resources and activities are fantastic to use across school and we used them as part of our numeracy week in assemblies, lessons and online learning. Our students really enjoyed learning about money and inclusion and they cannot wait for the next challenge!”
