The Power of Money: Breaking down barriers through applied financial education for young people

Labour : 10:30-11:30 am Tuesday 24th September, This Is Purpose Tent (Secure Zone), Liverpool

Conservative 11am-12pm Tuesday 1st October, Dolce Room, Hyatt Hotel (Secure Zone), Birmingham

With over 60 years of facilitating opportunities for young people to apply their learning to real world situations, we know the difference that an ‘applied learning’ approach to financial education can have on their financial capability and social mobility.

It is vital for young people to learn about money and develop the skills to protect them from future financial harm. But financial education has little or no context if you do not have access to practical opportunities to use money in your everyday life, making it all the more vital that young people are exposed to applied learning opportunities in school to emulate those experiences.

Our research shows that when young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are taught financial education within a real world, applied learning context they greatly exceed the average financial capability of the UKs population.

That’s why we’re partnering with HSBC UK – a long term partner in our financial education work – and The Purpose Coalition – one of the UK’s largest social mobility campaigns covering 7m people and over 700 organisations – to host a panel to discuss the role applied learning has in boosting young people’s financial capability, increasing future productivity and assisting social mobility.

This panel discussion will bring together Sharon Davies (CEO of Young Enterprise), Rt Hon Justine Greening and Nick Forbes CBE (The Purpose Coalition), Adam Marshall CBE and Sally Williams from HSBC UK, and a young person from the Scouts with policy makers. The discussion will focus on the importance offinancial education opportunities both in and out of school, and the practical steps to embed this as an opportunity for every young person.

If you are attending party conference this year, or a member of your team is, we invite you to join us in these discussions, network with like-minded organisations and engage with key parliamentarians on the importance of financial education for all young people.

If you would like to connect with the team at Young Enterprise during party conference for a coffee, please email alice.clarke@y-e.org.uk, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
