MyBnk cover topics such as saving, budgeting, debt, independent living and public and student finance. We also design projects and training programmes for others. Since 2007 we have helped over 300,000 young people learn how to manage their money. Two thirds of our work is now with young adults in vulnerable circumstances, such as those leaving the UK care system, focusing on ‘survival’ money skills for independent living.
Here’s some of our latest work across the UK:
- We’ve expanded our award-winning youth homeless prevention scheme, The Money House to Scotland and the Midlands. In-person, and via Zoom, we teach young people on the pathway to social housing, how to keep their first home. The new sites in Birmingham and Glasgow opened this summer and are tackling homelessness through financial education. Supported by the Berkeley and JP Morgan Chase Foundations, Pimco, SGN and Quilter.
- To mark National Care Leavers’ Week, MyBnk has just released a ground-breaking new report on the financial education provided to care leavers by local authorities, supported by the Berkeley Foundation and Trust for London. Gathering data from a UK-wide freedom of information request to local authorities and surveys and interviews with care leavers, our research shows 67% of care leavers feel anxious about money and 80% want more help managing their finances. The report presents key findings and recommendations to improve life chances for young care leavers.
- MyBnk took part in Money and Pensions Service’s Talk Money Week 2022 from 7th – 11th November. The week is an opportunity for everyone to get involved with events and activities across the UK which help people have more open conversations about their money. Throughout the week, MyBnk delivered expert-led financial education to over 2,000 young people and created some new free resources for primary and secondary age which are available on our website. These can be used by parents or teachers. We also launched a new competition in primary schools to design a new MyBnk mascot.
