Money and Pensions Service

The vision of the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) is ‘everyone making the most of their money and pensions’. We are an arm’s length body of government committed to ensuring that people throughout the UK have guidance and access to the information they need to make effective financial decisions over their lifetimes.

MaPS leads delivery of the 10 year UK Strategy for Financial Wellbeing, working collectively with a range of partners, to achieve five national goals, one of which is: two million more children and young people in the UK receiving a meaningful financial education by 2030.

Since the publication of the strategy, MaPS has been working with partners to build Delivery Plans for each of the UK nations. The plans make recommendations on how, collectively, we can roll out initiatives that can make a difference to people, helping them to make the most of their money now and in the future. We will publish each of the four Delivery Plans individually, starting later in the Autumn.

MaPS has already implemented several initiatives as part of the delivery of financial wellbeing for children and young people, including working with NatWest to digitise our flagship parenting programme, Talk, Learn, Do, and producing Local Authority guides for financial education.

Our Pathfinder and Innovation Programmes, pilots to test what works and addressing gaps in financial education, will also shortly be concluding. We will share the findings with the sector early in 2022.

Financial Education Provision Mapping 2021 – get involved

MaPS will shortly begin work on a financial education provision mapping exercise. This will build the most comprehensive and up-to-date picture of work taking place across the UK to improve children and young people’s money skills. If you would be willing to take part in this project, please complete the short consent form.

Talk Money Week 8th – 12th November

Talk Money Week is an annual campaign coordinated by MaPS to get the nation talking about money and will take place on 8-12 November. The week provides a platform to have a conversation about money between families and friends, at work or at school. Our goal is to turn talking about money from one of the UK’s least favourite topics into something commonplace.

This year, talking money with children and young people is a key priority for the campaign, with several activities and resources aimed at helping educators, parents and carers talk money both in the classroom and at home. Download our Participation Pack to get involved.

Talk Money in Schools

To help teachers deliver activities aligned with Talk Money Week, this year MaPS has produced a digital Talk Money Week Toolkit for Schools. The toolkit signposts to key resources, organisations that can help and other ideas on how to talk money with pupils and engage parents. The resource is available in both English and Welsh.

Many organisations from across the financial education sector will also be getting involved with the week, hosting their own activities, to help increase the reach of the week in schools across the UK.

Talk Money at home

As part of Talk Money Week, MaPS plans to run a PR campaign encouraging parents to talk to their children about money. Look out for more information during the week!
