Christians Against Poverty – October 2024

Who are Christians Against Poverty?

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) partners with local churches across the UK to provide life transforming help to people experiencing poverty. Our work includes face to face debt advice, money guidance, financial education, employability coaching and community support groups.

Our USP in financial education

For over 10 years, Christians Against Poverty (CAP) has resourced local church volunteers to bring financial education to schools and community groups. These volunteers bring confidence and passion in delivering financial education, and provide a low cost and scalable way of helping schools in particular improve their financial education provision.

Because CAP is a trusted voice in helping churches deliver impactful and relevant services to their community, we are able to activate skilled volunteers who otherwise wouldn’t consider financial education as a volunteering opportunity.

Launching brand new resources!

This Talk Money Week, CAP will be releasing brand new versions of our resources for the 9-11s and 14-16s age brackets. These resources enable children to learn and improve core budgeting skills in an interactive and age appropriate format.

Budgeting for 9-11s – an overview

Over four 45 minute sessions, children learn about different types of income and expenses and explore how to prioritise expenditure. They learn how to plan and balance a simple budget for a weekend away, explore saving, and consider the challenges faced by those experiencing financial difficulties. Each session includes physical movement and engaging activities to ensure an effective learning experience

Budgeting for 14-16s – an overview

Over a fast moving 45-60 minute session, a short animated video introduces young people to ‘Toby’ – a 16 year old with a little bit of income and a lot of potential expenses! Through group discussion and a live digital budget balancing activity, they debate the different ways that Toby can seek to balance his budget and achieve his goals. Should he ditch his girlfriend, pick up an extra weekend shift, or maybe just lay off the chicken nuggets? Something has to be done.

Exploring money and Christian faith

Where appropriate for the setting, coaches can include reflections on Christian teaching in areas such as generosity, contentment and poverty, that invite children and young people to consider how money management can connect to deeper values in their lives.
