APPG on Financial Education for Young People – October 2023

Return to Forum Updates Homepage

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People launched in 2011 and has grown to be one of the largest groups of its type within Parliament, with almost 200 members sitting in the House of Commons or the House of Lords

The APPG enables MPs, Peers and other stakeholders with an interest in financial education to come together to discuss:

  • Current provision of financial education in schools and colleges
  • Better equipping young people to make informed financial decisions
  • Help making resources and qualifications available to young people in education
  • Supporting schools in the delivery of financial capability
  • Developing the curriculum to require schools and colleges to provide financial education
Westminster Hall Debate, September 6th 2023

Chair of the APPG, Jerome Mayhew MP, led a Westminster Hall Debate on 6th September 2023 on financial education in schools, put forward by the Centre for Social Justice.

The debate received cross-party representation with responses from Catherine McKinnell (Shadow Schools Minister) and Nick Gibb (Schools Minister).

The debate called for improved awareness and delivery of financial education in secondary schools, and for financial education to be added to the primary curriculum in England.

The Minister for Schools has subsequently asked for more information on two ideas for improving the delivery of financial education in secondary schools. These are:

  1. Having an up-to-date centralised textbook / lessons resource that is available for teachers to more easily implement financial education teaching in class
  2. Piloting 30 mins per fortnight of dedicated financial education during school hours, to be tested with two year groups (possibly years 8 and 9)

These ideas have already been discussed with the Youth Financial Capability Group, and the APPG Secretariat are in the process of organising a roundtable with educators and teachers to discuss these ideas and consider appropriate ways to test with young people.

Upcoming Activities

Ten year anniversary of financial education on the curriculum: 2024 marks the 10year anniversary of financial education being on the secondary curriculum in England. The APPG is exploring ideas of how to use this occasion to further advocate for improved access and delivery of financial education for all young people.

Research enquiry: The APPG are exploring the viability of an enquiry into financial education across devolved areas of the UK at primary, secondary and FE level. This would look into current practices, successes and the impact on financial literacy, and what we can learn from case studies.
