Financial education guidance for schools in Wales and Northern Ireland
In March, MaPS (Money and Pensions Service) launched new financial education guidance for schools in Wales and Northern Ireland, endorsed by Welsh Government and the curriculum authority in Northern Ireland. The guidance explores how learning about money fits into the curriculum, sets out the steps schools can take to improve their provision and highlights the services and resources schools can use to support them. The new materials complement guidance published for England and Scotland in 2020-21. Find out more about MaPS guidance for schools
‘Improving Financial Wellbeing through Teacher and Practitioner Training and Target Provision’ Grant programme – delivery of the grant programme supporting expert partners to expand and embed teacher training and develop provision for children and young people in vulnerable circumstances is now complete. We are currently in the analysis and reporting phase and aim to share findings later this year. Find out more about the grant programme.
Digital financial literacy literature review – MaPS has just published a literature review exploring the impact of increased digitalisation of money on children and young people’s financial education. The review highlights that there are gaps in the current evidence base, partly due to the landscape changing so rapidly, but calls for collaboration between educators, financial institutions, and policymakers to build on these findings and develop evidence-based approaches that address the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the digital age. Read the literature review here.
MaPS has also published a supporting blog which details some of the literature review’s findings, plus MaPS’ research that relates to children and young people’s use of digital money. Read the blog here.
Financial education provision mapping 2024
From Autumn 2024, MaPS will be undertaking a provision mapping exercise to build an up-to-date picture of financial education programmes for children and young people across the UK. The research will identify trends and gaps in provision to inform the work of the financial education sector. Find out more about the research and how to take part.
Talk Money Week – 4th-8th November 2024
Talk Money Week is the annual campaign that aims to get people across the UK talking about money. This year, MaPS is inviting partners, organisations and businesses across the UK to encourage their own audiences to Do One Thing that could help improve their financial wellbeing. Talk Money Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of financial education and make a noise about the work you do to improve children and young people’s money skills. A participation pack, communications tools and a Toolkit for Schools will soon be available at: maps.org.uk/en/our-work/talk-money-week. We look forward to celebrating the week with you!
