City Pay It Forward

City Pay it Forward is a charity that works with schools to teach students the basics in financial literacy. It was started some years ago by a group of civically-minded senior business professionals who decided to use their experience as parents and their knowledge as finance professionals to fill a gap in the curriculum. The aim is to help address some of the issues of youth indebtedness by educating younger generations around financial literacy topics and to make sure that good financial habits are developed early in life.

Background

In 2020, after lengthy collaboration with leading educators and interactions with over 20,000 students at over 150 schools across the country, we created and published a comprehensive, standalone financial literacy curriculum for year 6 students.

The City Pay it Forward Year 6 financial literacy curriculum comprises four parts: Teacher’s Manual, PowerPoint presentations, videos and teacher’s notes.

We delivered the curriculum, free of charge, to all 21,000 primary schools in the UK. The materials are all available free of charge on our website.

Roll-out of the curriculum to the Miami-Dade Public School District

Following the success of our Y6 Curriculum in the UK, we have embarked upon a ground-breaking collaboration with the Miami-Dade Public School District in the State of Florida, US.  This public school district is the fourth largest in the US.

On 5th May 2022, almost 30,000 fifth grade students across the Miami-Dade Public School District will engage with our six-hour financial literacy curriculum.  The programme will be rolled out over six days and is being pushed out mandatorily through the Mathematics Department of Miami-Dade.  The curriculum is on our website https://citypayitforward.com/curriculum/us-curriculum/.

It is worth noting that the Governor of Florida just signed into law a requirement that high school students undertake some form of financial literacy education before they graduate.  Florida is now the largest state to require this education and other states, including Tennessee, are now following suit (a total of 22 states now have this requirement).

The initiative has been a fantastic collaboration between the Miami-Dade Public School District, the University of Miami School of Education and City Pay it Forward.  As with everything we do at City Pay it Forward, it is being provided to the school district for free.

It has been really inspirational to see Miami-Dade taking such a proactive approach by dedicating so much time (six hours!) from their teaching timetable to this important life skill at the primary school level.  They are certainly trendsetters in the state and City Pay it Forward are delighted to be working on this important milestone with them.

Other selected initiatives that we have successfully completed in the last twelve months include:

  • Working together with the Ismaili community in the UK to roll out a six-part financial literacy programme called FinLit4Kids for children aged 9-12 years old
  • Participating in London Stock Exchange’s Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy with Julia Hoggett, CEO of LSE
  • Continuing to present regularly to hundreds of pupils at schools around the country to enhance their knowledge around financial literacy
  • Continuing to receive incomings from teachers and schools around the world and exploring ways to leverage our materials and expertise in these different areas
